My topic will still be about how Somali  culture and the tradition differ from western countries. My audience will be the people who i work with. I chose them because they have no idea about it. So i'm trying to make them learn and see what they well say. My purpose of choosing this project is to give the audience and the people who are reading my paper to understand what my culture is about , and how it communicates with the world. I'm gone be using some pictures to explain what is about ,weather its food or people dancing to help the audience understand better instead of just telling them without looking at something excited. Also i'll be using some Survey of questions to ask my audience what they learned from my ideas of my project.

  1. Hey Mariam,

You're off to a good start here. I especially like that you have such a meaningful purpose--I like the idea of your project operating as a sort of public education about Somali culture.

In terms of your audience, it sounds like it's fairly specific, but could you tell me more about it? I don't know where you work, so I don't know who these people you work with are. You will probably need to explain that in your project. But, the idea of approaching a group that knows very little makes your project seem that much more necessary, which is excellent.

In terms of the pieces of your project, I'd encourage you to really consider what sort of stuff your audience would find appealing. Are they the type of audience that would like visuals and take them seriously? If so, using photos to create a piece of your project is great. You could create a photo essay if you wanted, using only photos to demonstrate what your culture is all about. Or, you could put photos into a powerpoint presentation, and use photos and texts to educate your co-workers. I also like your idea of a survey. But, since you couldn't really survey them about what they learned until after this project was due, you might instead consider surveying them ahead of time to find out what they do and don't know. You could then use that data to create a hand out or fact sheet. On one side, it could state their beliefs about Somali culture; on the other side, it could correct these beliefs with actual facts and info. It could be a sort of "myths and facts" handout, which would be especially meaningful to them since you were working with their input! You still need a third original piece to the project then (in addition to the required introduction and works cited page). You might consider doing something more creative, if your co-workers would respond to that. You could write a poem, a short story, even create a work of art that expressed something about Somali culture...perhaps a poem that describes the wedding traditions? Or a short story about Somali religion? Something like that could be a fascinating, creative way to educate your co-workers about a specific aspect of your culture.

I will look forward to seeing your project, Mariam. I really encourage you to communicate with me, through email or by meeting face-to-face, to talk about this as we work on it. I am happy to answer any questions or address any concerns one-on-one as we go along, okay? :)

  2. I love to learn about other cultures it is really neat to learn about all the customs of different people. One time I was got on a bus in Israel and I went to the back, and all these ladies were yelling at me in Hebrew, I could not help to laugh which probably made it worse, but I was not laughing at them I was laughing at the place I found myself in, I was in the woman only part of the bus, which was this imaginary line that existed only when orthodox Jewish woman were on the bus. I could not understand one word of what they were saying, but it opened up my mind of how different things are in different cultures. I am a big fan of using videos as a medium to convey ideas, seeing how American’s are dominated by it would be great I think if you could show us some songs they sign, the dancing, the dresses, and the all customs. It would also go a long way if we could hear the music they use. But if you cannot do these things, power point presentation might be useful to explain each of these things. I think your project is important for Americans to see what some of Somali is all about, so it can help paint a different picture, because what we hear is all about the pirate’s. Hey, you might use one of Patrick’s ideas and making a pamphlet that shows the events that take place in the wedding or the order that the wedding goes in.
